Ashima Disc Brake Rotors: Out Of The Box
February 23rd, 2009 by Guitar TedWe recently recieved some Ashima disc brake rotors to try out on our 29″ers. The Ashima company is out of Taiwan where the Ashima products are designed and made. Ashima also makes some trick, lightweight disc brake calipers that we are hoping to get our grimy mits on someday, but for now, we’ll be looking at just the rotors.

Lots of curves in the Ashima design.
Ashima calls these rotors “AiRotor” and the numeral following that name designates the size. So for instance, we have an “AiRotor180″ and an “AiRotor160″ here to test. These rotors are said to be tested to extremes by Ashima to insure that they will withstand the rigors of mountain biking with ease. They are of the six bolt standard and will work with most disc brake systems out there that use the 160mm, 180mm, and 203mm sizes. The rotors are 100% stainless steel construction.
Our examples bolted up just fine with the supplied bolts to our Bontrager Race X Lite wheels. The weights of each are: 160mm = 80 grams, 180mm = 110 grams. We’ll be using these on our bikes as soon as we can get out on the trails this spring and then throughout the summer. look for a first impressions, and long term test results to come later.
Ashima rotors are branded Origin 8 on the packaging and can be had through any independant bike shop that uses J&B Importers as a distributor.
