Budget Build: Misfit Psycles Dissent- The Parts III
February 15th, 2009 by Guitar TedWe will be taking a look at more of the parts from our Misfit Psycles “Budget Build” again today. We’ll start things off with the seating for one………

Used but not abused
The saddle and seat post on the Misfit Dissent are a bit interesting. First let’s take a look at the saddle. It is a “take off”- a commonly used term in bicycle shops for components removed from a new bicycle that were substituted for upgraded (usually) ones by the new owner of the bicycle. These parts are sometimes resold out on the shop floor, or in many cases, are simply gathering dust in the back room somewhere. I scored this SE Racing branded saddle from a local shop that had it in a tub with about 20 other saddles in their back room. Cost? $10.00
The seat post is another interesting story. The shop owner of another local bike shop had this carbon seat post in his stash of parts. Through talking with him one day, I discovered that he had it and made an offer to buy it. It is a 27.2mm X 400mm post, and was made by component maker Tamer back in the late 90’s. Cost? $15.00
While you may not find the perfect saddle and such a nice post the way I did, it doesn’t hurt to “beat the bushes” from time to time to score some decent, lightly used, or NOS components that will perform just fine on your next mountain bike build.

I decided to go hydro with the brakes on this build.
The brakes I chose for this Budget Build are the Quad brand “Dime XC” brakes. I went ’round and ’round with the decision to go with mechanical disc brakes or hydraulics. On one hand, there are several mechanical disc brake systems that are less expensive than the Quad brakes. However; the performance would not be as good, and I deemed good brakes as an important thing on this bike. I considered the Avid products, but in every case I could come up with when budgeting for parts, the price would always either be the same, or just slightly less than the cost of the Quad system. Besides, the Quad brakes are white!
In the end, the Quad brakes got the nod, and they are great performers. Price? About $99.00 for each end.

Pedals and tires were new on the Budget Build.
Wrapping up the Budget Build, I used new Shimano M520 pedals (approx. $50.00) and shod the wheels with WTB Prowler SL 29″er tires, (approx $45.00 each), and stuffed them with a pair of rim strips at about $2.00 and 26″er presta valve tubes at $4.00 each.

The Misfit Psycles “Cod Cog” goes round and round…
At the back end of the drive train, we used Misfit Psycles 18T “Cod Cog” basic conversion kit. It comes wit spacers to convert your casstte hubbed wheel to single speed duty. ($38.75) The cog is motivated by a SRAM PC-830 chain ($20.00) and the wheels are held in by some steel “take off” skewers I scored at a local bike shop for $10.00.
