Fluid Recovery Drink: Out Of The Box

November 6th, 2008 by Guitar Ted

Note: This report is filed by Grannygear from Southern California.

A proper recovery is key to any training regimen. You may be able to ride hard on Monday, jam like a madman on Wednesday, and sprint like the wind on Friday, but if come Saturday the pack leaves you in the dust with dead legs and a puzzled look on your face, perhaps you forgot about adding a recovery plan to your schedule.

The ability to perform well one day and continue that performance over consecutive workouts demands that the body get the nutrition it needs when it needs it so it can rebuild and recover. In fact, I have seen more than a few cyclists that actually ended up becoming slower, not faster, as their bodies could not recover from strenuous days in the saddle.

Welcome Fluid, a relatively new product to jump into the competitive recovery drink marketplace.

I first saw the product at a local mountain bike event. I had been testing some Niner bikes for twentynineinches.com and was feeling fragged. I took a sample of Fluid to drink. I found it to be very tasty, not too sweet or heavy, but the oddest thing was there was nearly no aftertaste. I tried it again and the same feeling of a very clean taste came across. I was intrigued.

I met Richard Smith, one of the creators of Fluid. Born from the creativity of two Cal Poly San Luis Obispo students and mixed in someone’s kitchen, they had what they felt was a better approach to a recovery solution.

From the website:

How does Fluid work?
Fluid is specially formulated to help the body recover from physical activity in four different ways:

1. Fluid restores muscle energy levels with complex carbohydrates and all natural fruit sugar

2. Fluid supplies muscles with ultra pure whey protein isolate and 2500mg of muscle supporting L-Glutamine.

3. Fluid prevents aches, pains, and soreness associated with exercise by stopping inflammation before it starts.

4. Fluid replenishes the body with electrolytes and provides immune boosting Vitamin C.

100% Natural, 100% Effective.
Fluid does NOT contain:

Artificial ingredients

Artificial colors

Artificial flavors, and it never will.

At my age, I am keen on recovery, since as we get older we need more time in between hard workouts. With a plan to do longer and harder rides next year, I was very interested in trying a better supplement. Actually, I have been using chocolate milk for recovery (yeah, I know…look it up. The science is out there and it tastes yummy).

So, I will be putting Fluid to the test over the next few months to see if it helps this old guy out. Will it replace Nestles Quik? We shall see. I will say as a teaser that I am very intrigued with the results so far, but I want to give it a longer term test before I come to any conclusions.
