Acros Headset: Out Of The Box

October 26th, 2008 by Guitar Ted

The headset: It is one of those components that you barely notice anymore unless it is anodized or not working correctly. Granted, the advent of threadless headsets in the early 90’s made headsets sort of “invisible” components, but before that, I think I had to mess with my headset before every ride!

Now there is another choice in a high end headset that is similar to another well known, top of the line headset we are all familiar with. This headset model has the anodized colors, sealed bearings, light weight, and a ten year warranty, but it is from Germany. The company’s name is Acros, and they are trying to make a push into the U.S. market with a wide array of top end componentry. I decided to check out this fine looking red anodized Acros headset model.

This 1 1/8th headset is 106 grams and comes with a star nut. MSRP is $120.00 and as mentioned above, the manufacturer warranties this headset against defects for ten years. Interestingly the compression ring on the Acros headsets are plastic split ring affairs that should not cause the dreaded creaking that some other top end headsets display that don’t use this sort of an arrangement. Acros headsets are available through your local bike shops and some online stores.

Look for an update on the performance of the Acros headset here in an upcoming post.
