Interbike 2008: Color Trends

September 28th, 2008 by Guitar Ted

Arleigh wrote about seeing more color at Interbike this year and the trend is certainly in full swing. Here we’ll explore some of the trends makings and see where this may be going.

The new trend in color isn’t new at all in BMX or trials circles. Both disciplines have been sporting anodized bits for several years now. Only the road and mountain bike circles have been stuck in black and white (well actually silver) all this time. Part of what we are seeing now in mountainbike components is being driven by the BMX and trials side.

Asian component companies are quick to recognize trends and capitalize upon them. Original equipment for manufacturing top brands then can be influenced and colored components start to become common on shop floors. Will we see it happen? The number of colored components at Interbike would indicate that it is a high possibility.

When well known manufacturers start playing around with color, like Race Face has with these cranks, then you know it isn’t going away real soon. Anodized components are definitely back. How long they stay is anybodies guess.

Of course, the urban/fixie crowd has embraced anodized and colored components with open arms. Will it infect the road cyclists choices? Possibly, but road cycling isn’t as “trend friendly” as other facets of cycling.

The BMX scene isn’t just about anodized bits. Colored components dominate that scene and one of those colors, white, has transferred over to the dirt jump crowd which in turn has found its way into all forms of mountain biking. White is a definite trend and will be seen all over on 2009 components and complete bikes.

Color: It is here and getting bigger. How long we’ll see the cycling world in technicolor is tough to say, but it is a refreshing change for now.

Call me a “fashion victim”, but I love this trend…I’d like to see more crankarm/chainring choices in colors, too.

White seems like an incredibly bad color choice for mountain bikes, but I’ve seen a lot of white components on road bikes recently, too.

There was lots of shiny chromed stuff, too.

Ah, this takes me back. I need to throw on some flannel and crank up the Soundgarden. Then dig all of those hideously mismatched parts out of the toolbox and put them on a bike because they’re cool again.
