Gore Ride On Cables: Initial Thoughts

August 17th, 2008 by Arleigh

Gore Ride On Sealed Low Friction System
MSRP : $50-65
From their site: Completely protected from the elements by
continuous liner and GRUBâ„¢ Seals. Patented cable coating technology designed for low friction and durability. Works with most brakes or shifters on most bikes.

Two weeks ago I finished installing these Gore cables (shifting and brake) on my dual purpose commuter and 650b geared mountain bike.  Charlotte, NC is very dry during the summer so though I have had these cables since early summer it wasn’t their time to be put to test during dry and dusty riding.  The fall/winter is the time that Charlotte gets tons of rain and simply GROSS days that lead into weeks.   The bike, as I said, is dual purpose.  During the week it is my commuter and gets put on a bus to the trek on the high way up north.  Twice this week alone the bike was on the front of the bus going roughly 75mph in pouring rain.  I would say that the bike was saturated with grime and rain those two days.  Then it is ridden off road and on to work.  A bit of gravel, single track and a stretch of road.  The gravel gets very thin and saturates all my clothing, the single track is slick and I have laid down several times and the road is road, it picks of more and more rain with grime to stick on top.

The set up: The cables and housing were pretty easy to install after reading through the directions once.  There is a proper order of ferrules, liner, housing and cutting.  Once you have that down its pretty easy, just make sure to use a sharp pair of cutters or razor blade.  Both the brake and shifting come with dual ends.  The brake for road or mountain and the shifting for Campagnola or Shimano.  I found this pretty handy from a mechanic and shop employee.  No longer do you need to stock multiple cable sets for various set ups.

Initial impressions: I have my system set up on SRAM trigger shifters.  I think due to the liner needing to wrap around the rear derailleur a bit to get to the pinch bolt I have gotten some premature wear.  There is a bit more drag there then 2 weeks ago but it isn’t due to grime as I have checked both end of the liner and nothing is in there!  Some time this week I will pull the liner from the rear derailleur and see if the wear is from that point of contact.  If not I will double check my lines of the housing running, making sure there isn’t any corners cut or the cable isn’t unnecessarily long.

There is hope for a completely sealed system, I need to work out the kinks first!
