The Fitting Game
August 11th, 2008 by ArleighAs a shop employee I have been fit on my bike by several folks. Years ago it was by a different person depending on the team that was trained with the Bike Fit System. The system seemed to work well, but didn’t really play in any mind to my flexibility (I have none) or true wants of a fitting. It was very fact based but a good fitting expert would take the information and apply their theories and input to the final product. In closer years I have had the luck of one co worker who was a Serotta Fit certified specialist take the time to align my mountain bike to me. It was a thrown together fit between customers and I didn’t really get the whole shebang out of it. The ideas behind Serotta did intrigue me and I wanted to know more.
A side note - I have had the pleasure of attending two of Michael Sylvester’s Fitting Seminars. Both times I was fit by fellow students to my road bike. Sylvester’s training was used to help develop the Serotta Fit so again a lot of his thoughts, ideas and theories really intrigued me. His thoughts were to take the time to understand the body alignment, flexibility, injuries and wants to obtain a good fit on a bike.

Working now at a very fit driven bike shop I am able to really pull from A+ fit specialist that have been doing it for a number of years. Today I had an appointment for a full bottom to top fit on my Salsa Ala Carte. There were many components of the fitting that simply wouldn’t do justice to put in one post. Going forward this will be an on going journal of my experience getting fit, the different levels of a fit and documenting all the various aspects. Long term my hope is to really take what I learn from Serotta’s classes, suspension tuning and mountain bike handling to further push the industry.
