Origin 8 Space Bar Review

June 9th, 2008 by Guitar Ted

I have owned a few Origin 8 Space Bars and used them on several bikes. This is a review and some thoughts on the Space Bar in comparison to the very similar On One Mary Bar.

The Space Bar is made from 6061-T6 tubular alloy and has a width of 645 millimeters. The stem clamp diameter is 25.4mm and although the web site for Origin 8 says this bar takes road controls, it does not. It fits mountain bike controls, so don’t be misled by that info there.

Some folks might be a bit concerned with positioning with a Space Bar. Not to worry! I have found that by overlaying a “standard” swept bar over a mounted Space Bar, that the actual end position for the hands is virtually the same. The difference being the angle that your hands are at. The angle of the grip section is close to 40 degrees and there is plenty of room for controls of your choice. The bars do have rise (or drop) and you can gain about an inch and a half of rise if you so desire. I have run the Space Bar upside down with excellent results as well.

Out riding, the Space Bar puts your elbows in a more relaxed, next to your body position and aligns your wrists and fore arms in a more natural way. My riding has shown me that they work just fine in single track and turning tight corners isn’t a problem. I especially like the leverage I can generate out of the saddle on climbs. Imagine hoisting a pail full of water upwards with one hand and you might see how it is while out of the saddle pulling upwards on the Space Bar. The bar is plenty stiff, no noodle bar here! That means that if you run a rigid set up, the Space Bar may not be to your liking from a comfort standpoint. It doesn’t yield to trail obstacles much at all!

I will give you my thoughts on the Mary bar in comparison here. (I think I can speak on this from my Midge Bar experience) The On One product is a much finer looking piece, no doubt. I would also suspect that it is slightly lighter than the Kalloy made Space Bar. (The Space Bar is listed at 290 grams) The center section of the Mary is slightly different, most notably the clamp area, which looks much cleaner and neater than the Space Bar’s does. Overall, it is a better looking, slightly lighter, and probably a slightly more comfortable bar than the Space Bar. However; you will pay nigh onto three times the price of a Space bar for a Mary Bar, so it comes at a premium.

In my mind, the Space Bar wins for it’s versatility, toughness, and value. The average retail price for a Space Bar is about $25.00. Not bad for a handle bar and great for something that breaks from the normal 5-7 degree flat bars and riser bars that don’t have more than 10 degrees sweep. You don’t have to use a different stem, and you can use non-traditional grips, like Ergon grips. All your controls will work, no special considerations there either.

Try a Space Bar out. I highly recommend them!

So how do you like these bars?

A buddy of mine snapped them at the stem, so I’m a bit hesitant….

    Thanks

Tony: I like them alot. Keep in mind, anything can break. I don’t think that the Space Bar is flawed or inherently poorly designed. It isn’t a “free ride” bar, a “dirt jump bar” etc. Some folks are harder on equipment than others, and there are all sorts of mitigating circumstances that come into play.

I’ve heard of folks breaking Mary Bars too, it’s maybe not the type of bar for everybody. I like them (the Space Bar), feel safe with them, and they fit my riding style. Each person has to make their own decision and live with the consequences. ;)

    Thanks Ted.

    I think I’ll give it a try.

The guy I referred to is a heavy dude, where I’m 6′ 4″ at 155lbs I doubt I’ll have issues. I mainly ride hard pack single track and the daily ride to the beach.

    Cheers > Tony

Actually, may I ask, have you ever tried the 17 degree salsa flat bar?

Tony: I use one all the time. Love it.

The Salsa bars at 17 degree’s are a cats meow for some; but there is definately a market for old geezers like me too, and the higher rise Space-Bar is nicer. For the Mountain rider…definately the Salsa, but for the pure tourist, or casual/sport rider…comfort…Space Bar. To a guy like me, just looks alone score points. I am putting the Space Bars on my new fixie.

My Mary was 315 or 325g or so.

Looking for Space Bars with decent shipping to Europe…might get 3. Any tips?

Ran these on an Se Stout, and really liked ‘em. Can’t beat the price. Gotta give a shout to the Soma Sparrow, too, cuz it takes BE shifters or brake levers if you so desire.
