When Shimano jumped from 9 to 10 I was actually suprised how much more I liked the smaller jump between gears. Note that I use a 12-25.

The issue can be better adressed on the roadbike with a compact crankset. Using a large jump between the front rings to minimize overlapping gears would let you use tighter spacing in the cogs 12-23 or 12-21 while still giving you climbing and sprinting gears.

On the mountainbike if they could actually get it to shift could be finally the thing to get people to realize the front derailure on mtn bike is more hassle then its worth. A 1x10, if it shifted would be sweet.
