Tomi Cog : Thoughts
May 20th, 2008 by ArleighTomi, oh Tomi, your cog is lovely.
I’ve been riding the Tomi Cog on my Surly 1×1 for a month now. Prior to the 1×1 it was on my Surly Karate Monkey. The uses were much different, one for commuting and one for bush wacking or trail searching. One had very hard gearing and then the other had very easy for true off road riding. The cog so far has done beautifully. Never once has a bolt backed out, chain studdered or tooth bulked.

The Tomi Cog site recommends to run a PC-1 or 1/8″ chain. I did so for the first month or so and then when swapping out to the 1×1 a bit of laziness took over and I left the PC-89 that was on the bike there. The chain doesn’t seem to stick or grind on the cog anymore than normal. It might end up wearing out the chain prematurely but its a used chain I wasn’t going to use for anything else. With the proper set up (chainring, cog and chain) I think this drivetrain could outlast most. The simplicity of a single speed but fact you can flop the cog over for more wear is a huge plus.
Two thumbs up for Tomi Cog. Allowing all of us single speeders on to the fixed gear fad.
