E.13 Guide Ring : 1st Impressions

May 14th, 2008 by Arleigh

A few weeks back a couple chain rings rolled into my bike lab. A couple months ago I reported on e.13 producing odd size chainrings. Chain rings of this type were available but they were often heavy or super expensive. These beautiful rings are made out of 7075 aluminum and priced between $34.50 to $36.25.

I have been pretty excited about these rings. As they are going on my single speed I needed to wait until I was riding strongly to upgrade a tooth. A tooth upgrade might not seem a lot but to someone that just had a bad back injury that 1 tooth is a big difference. Finally one day I started spinning out at my local trail which meant it was time to move up in the world.

The Truvativ stock 32t came off for a lighter and sexier 33t. Unfortunately my scale was off so I have no way of telling how much it weighed. To the hand it felt lighter and the machining might of helped that.

The ring rocked through my ride.. Literally, I bounced off a couple rocks and other than a temporary stiff chain link the ring was solid. The next review probably won’t be for a couple months until I see the wear on the chain and how it last through wear and tear.

Initial impressions are thumbs up. I do worry about the wear but that is something that will be proven with time. the other issue is they are only available in 4 bolt - 104 bolt diameter.
