First Impressions: Bontrager’s Inform RL Saddle
May 12th, 2008 by Guitar TedI have gotten a few rides in on the new Inform RL saddle and I now will list my first impressions of the saddle. I will say that the installation wasn’t any more difficult than it should be and that the set up was pretty straight forward. The rails are graduated for referance and the flat profile of the saddle took the guess work out of leveling it.

With the fit system indicating that I needed a wider saddle than I would have thought, I was expecting some discomfort since I don’t ride a saddle near this wide on most of my bikes. Nothing could have been further from the truth. It was a unique sensation to me, since I had never really had a saddle support me by my skeletal structure before and nothing else. I felt as if I was a bit unstable at first, since I could pivot around a bit on my sit bones. Weird!
A few rides later, that sensation was gone. I started to feel a bit more comfortable with this new way of supporting my body. It was quickly becoming natural, and it’s spoiling me for sure! I went back to an old saddle that before the arrival of the Inform RL, was one of my favorite saddles. It too has a rather flat profile, but it’s far narrower. Well, I can’t stand that saddle now! I will be removing it and getting it replaced as soon as I can for something wider, possibly another Inform RL.
The thing is, I really want to do a multi hour ride before passing further judgement. The Inform RL is a contender and a revelation for me. Soon I will be putting in that longer ride and I will be back to report how it went. Right now I will say that the saddle fit system is highly recommended. It has totally changed the way I look at saddles now and I think it will be one of, if not the most important things I’ve done to change my riding for the better in a long time. Stay tuned!

It sounds like the saddle is working fine, but perhaps the review is also more about the system which Trek (Bontrager) has developed to help the rider choose the proper saddle. Maybe a follow up with regards to the research Bontrager did to come up with the system would be informative. The system sounds similar to Specialized’s system as well. I side-by-side comparison could be interesting as well.

Guitar Ted, What is the brand/model of the rectangular top tube bag with the white trim seen in the picture?
THANK YOU!
That would be a Banjo Brothers bag. http://www.banjobrothers.com/
Great bags that don’t break the bank! I should probably do a bit of a post on that one, huh?
