Truvativ Stylo Cranks : 1st Impressions

May 7th, 2008 by Arleigh

Truvativ Stylo SS Cranks
Price: $139-155
Specs: 848 grams; 170 or 175mm;

These cranks were mounted up to my single swizzle roughly three weeks back. So far they have been ridden bottom bracket deep in water, been beat pretty hard on rock gardens and dropped, crank arm down, into a creek bed.

It is hard to say if I am a fan of outboard bearing cranks. I lust over a square taper crank set but I’m not sure if that is due to the lack of decent outboard bearings or the retro grouch that runs in my blood. Phil Wood did just come out with a pair of their own (not something you need to add to your current cups.) Most of my bikes do have outboard bearing cranks due to them being readily available lately.

Now that I have beat on that outboard bearing drum I want to say that so far these cranks are doing very well. The bottom bracket isn’t crunchy yet and I haven’t been standing on the pedals thinking “wow, I wish these would add 5 watts to my pedaling.” They are plenty stiff, but I ride a steel bike so bottom bracket stiffness really outweighs crank stiffness. It is very nice in the days of crazy frame design to have easy chain line adjustment. No need to buy multiple bottom bracket lengths to figure it out that magic chain line with the spacers that you can switch between the sides. Also if you switch between bottom bracket size frames (68mm and 73mm) you just need to add or subtract a spacer or two.

These cranks are clean cut, not too glitzy and very well priced. That is exactly everything I want in a single speed crank.

    woah…did you just call your bike a “single swizzle”…….does that mean the cranks should be called “swizzle sticks”? (that just sounds wrong, lol)

    I thought all the Truvativ stuff was also available in 180mm too. Maybe not, but I coulda sworn I heard that last year at Sea Otter.

    Guitar Ted :

    It looks like from Truvativ’s spec sheet the only 180mm available currently are the road line of Rouleur.

    All though I just sold my XXIX because I began to lothe the EBB, the stock Firex crank/BB I had absolutelt NO problem with, using the bike as a commuter a/o riding it through an 4-season year.
    I gave up the XXIX for a Stout and after a week I knew I needed shorter cranks and knowing how good external BBs are I went for an LX cranks.

    Stylo cranks do come in 180 - I’ve got a set of the Stylo 1:1 180s on my Monocog Flight.

    I believe sram hasn’t updated their site to reflect true spec.
