SRAM Juicy Ultimate Brakes
Price: $225.99
Details: Carbon, and magnesium which means light weight. 333grams for 160mm front
Includes: Lever, hose, caliper, rotor and hardware per set.

An XC geeks dream. Light weight with even the option to go 140mm in the rear to save more weight. Additional all the weight savings it is backed with Avid’s good name for hydraulic brakes. Ease of use and adjustabiility has made the Juicy line the goto for many mechanics and riders.

Editors note : I hope to get my hands on a set of these brakes by the end of the 2008 season to give a true test review.

I am an LBS mechanic, and while I agree that the Avid Juicy line of hydraulic brakes represents near perfection in cross-country oriented braking systems on paper, in reality they’re just not practical. I am somewhat of a perfectionist (as most LBS mechanics worth their salt are), especially when it comes to brake set-up, modulation, and above all feel. I find that the Avid system is nearly impossible to set-up properly. I’ve installed several sets of these brakes, and even after following the instructions to the tee, calling the company for “in the know” tips, and burning hours on multiple attempts have been left with a hit or miss record for setting these brakes up with good “feel”. I hate to say it because I love Avid’s V, and mechanical disc lines but I’ll take a set of Hayes or, dare I say it, Shimano hydros over any of the Juicy brakes any day.
