Spotlight On: Wipperman BMX 1 R 8 Chain
March 12th, 2008 by Guitar Ted
Recently I was given the opportunity to use a Wipperman BMX 1 R 8 chain on my fixed gear 29″er mountain bike. The chain, which is recommended as the strongest chain you can use for a fixed gear bike, sounded like the perfect choice for my project.
So, what’s the big deal here? Strength is paramount in the design, that’s what. That is quite evident the moment you take the Wipperman chain in your hand. The weight is the first thing that hit me. I had no idea what it weighed until later, but I knew this was one solid chain. Of course weight isn’t all there is to designing a strong part. You have to use that weight wisely.
The chain has 96 links out of the box that are nickle plated to resist rust. The pins are beefy and protrude through the sideplates more than most single speed chains I’ve taken a gander at. The side and inner plates are both straight sided and otherwise are unremarkable in their appearance. Not real pretty, but reeking of brute strength. All this ends up weighing a lot, as in 659 grams.
The chain installed with no drama using the supplied master link, although I had to use the entire chain on my 34T X 19T set up on my 29″er. Make sure you check the length of chain you’ll need before you spring for this chain. The chain has performed quite well on my fixed gear so far with nary a hiccup. Wipperman says it should be a long lasting chain that is rated as the second strongest chain in their line. A comforting thought as I apply back pressure on the pedals of my fixie.
Wipperman chains are available at most fine bike shops and the BMX 1 R 8 retails at about $62.00.
