The Mechanics Choice: Thomson Seatpost
February 12th, 2008 by ArleighThe Bike Lab is about upgrading your bike and building your dream rig. To that end, these are some of our top recommended upgrades. Most are things we actually use on our own rigs, or would feel comfortable recommending to our best friends. They are classic parts, smart designs, and in some cases new and revolutionary bits.
The list was compiled by Guitar Ted and Arleigh Jenkins, two real life bicycle mechanics and passionate cyclists. This is solely their considered opinions on what is a “Top Upgrade”. In the future, look for more “Top Upgrade” parts that will be getting reviewed here on the Bike Lab.
What It Is: Thomson Elite Seatpost. A staple of a well built bike. Lightweight, durable, strong and infinite tilt adjustment between minus 5° and plus 29°.
Why Is It A Mechanics Choice: For years manufacturers have been trying to create something to compete with this seat post. The ease of adjust ability, the lack of weight, one piece tube /head and 100% American made. Available in silver or black in almost every size ever thought of. Straight or set back. Many, many choices.
The Mechanic Says: I personally own 5 of these seat post. One that is in the standard 27.2 size has gone between roughly 13 bikes. The “Thomson” etched in the side is still showing strong.
Sexy, strong and light. What else do you need?

I am looking to lighten my rig, along with a carbon fork I am thinking of EC70 bars and seatpost, why would/should I chose the Thompson post?
I put a Thomson on my bike because I saw pictures of other’s cracked and broken seat posts. A very experienced rider I know is like you and has had the same seat post for years and switches it when he gets a new ride.
This sounds goofy, but I like the knurling on the post. I think it gives the post some “grip” and keeps in locked in place without having to wrench down on your clamp.
Quinn,
I run an EC90 handlebar, it actually will be part of our Mechanic’s choice run down. (Shhh don’t tell anyone) I love the bar and the sweep it offers.
As for Thompson seatposts — the adjust ability and durability have surpassed any EC70 seat post I’ve ever used. Sure the weight might be less but if you are worried about weight that much look into a ti seatpost or the Thomson “Master” series
hope that helps.. if not ask me more questions and I’ll do my best to answer.
