Joplin Adjustable Seatpost

January 31st, 2008 by Arleigh

Found this article over at Speedgoat earlier today.  A good write up on the Crank Brothers Joplin, adjustable, fly by the seat of your pants, seatpost. Which originally was the Maverick Speedball.  I’m sad to see the sizes are limited still and they haven’t figured out how to cram all that technology into a 27.2. Maybe one day…

CRANKBROTHERS JOPLIN

Maverick has licensed their Speedball adjustable seatpost technology to Crankbrothers. Crankbrothers has renamed the all mountain height adjustable seatpost the Joplin.

The seatpost will remain internally unchanged for 2008. However, the externals will undergo some of Crankbrothers signature anodizing. Oh, and the Maverick emblem is no longer on the adjustment lever as it has been replaced by the Crankbrothers logo.If you have a Maverick remote kit from your Speedball and you really want to get your hands on a new Joplin w/remote there is no need to wait for it to come out as the Maverick remote kit is compatible with Joplin posts. So just to clarify, Maverick remote kit + Crankbrothers Joplin post equals height adjustment without what would appear to be as crotch grabbing. We currently have 31.6mm Joplin (non-remote) posts in stock and we are expecting the other configurations both remote and non-remote shortly.

The Specs are as follows (31.6 non-remote version):Material: Aluminum
Length: 382mm
Minimum Insertion: 100mm
Range of Adjustment 75mm / 3in
Claimed Weight: 461g
Actual Weight: 478g
Available Diameters: 30.9mm, 31.6mm
Warranty: Two Years

this maybe dumb, but, How’s it work?
like an office chair? (pull lever, it extends until weight is applied?)

  2. 2 Arleigh

Yep, a lot like an office chair. Pull lever, if you have weight on it it pushes it down. Then it locks in place. Pull lever without weight on the air chamber pushes it up.

    does that make sense?

I love it when history repeats itself.
    Breezer Hite-Rite anyone?

I’m with Jonnyb…and you don’t see Hite-Rites too much anymore, so what gives? Do mountain bikers have to constantly adjust their saddle heights or something? Because I sure don’t. I’m like they say in the infomercials - “just set it and forget it!”

I don’t even like quick releases. This is another product solving a problem that doesn’t exsist. Like ghost rider set it and forget it.

Hey, A problem that may not exist for most, but if you a bigger guy like me you have to have your saddlle up in the clouds to be able to peddle ok and too high to get behind, which means as soon as you get anything near downhill your fighting to stay on the bike - something like the joplin cold be an essential.

For me, I use my 29er for commuting, mountain biking, and all my errands, and it would be very handy to have That adjustable of a seatpost!

This is a great thing for riders on all-round bikes who do it all. That’s my opinion. :)

This is a great idea for cross country riders. When climbing or slogging out long easy sections of a track you want your seat up high to get the most out of your legs. When going downhill, and the going gets fun you, want to get off that seat and get it low so it stops smacking you in the crotch whenever you shift your weight backwards over the back wheel. For people in a hurry its a pain in the arse to continually stop and readjust your seat height and getting that top height right takes a lot of messing around.
This post along with the gravity dropper serves a purpose.

Maybe I’m the only one who doesn’t like to rack their balls every time I jump. Gotta have the seat-be-gone on the fly yo…
