Ay Up! Lighting System

January 16th, 2008 by Arleigh

One morning this week a package came in the mail for me.  A light set that I have been very excited to get in my hands was finally here! Ay Up was a light company I mentioned in a post last week. A small company based out of Australia that is doing big and bright things.

For demo I was sent the “Regular” kit.
This includes :

  • 2 small
  • 1 large battery
  • charger
  • 12V and 220/240 adaptor
  • mounts
  • pouches

The lights and batteries are super small and light. Using a Sharpie to show a size comparison you can see how small these things are.

(The battery shown is a 3 hour.)

I played with mounting up the lights in the evening. I ran in to some snags as who ever was demoing the lights prior forgot to put some of mounting hardware back in. Nothing a couple zip ties and pump straps can’t fix!

As for mounting it comes with one for the handlebar and one for the helmet.

(Helmet mount is on left, handlebar on right.)

Handlebar mount - Allows the light to hover over the top of your stem, permanent due to zip ties.

I have the 12 hour battery zip tied under my stem and it isn’t even noticeable while turning. Over the weekend when I have more time I will reinstall everything with black zip ties or maybe some type of velcro straps.

Helmet mount - Very simple and flat. Permanent due to zip ties but smaller than other helmet mounts so I wouldn’t mind leaving it on all year long.

Ay Up in their instructions recommend to put the 3 hour battery on the back of your helmet. For longer rides I will end up doing this but due to lack of a long velcro strap I decided to put it in my jersey pocket. The kit came with an extra long extension cable to add length between your battery and light which gave me playing room.

So far the lights seem very universal and easy to use. No on/off switches to mess with when you have gloves on and the mounts are open to various configurations.

My first test ride will be this week. I hope to get a 3-3.5 hour ride in after work. My next post will be more about beam patterns, adjust ability and actual use of the light.

That’s a massive amount of lights, cables and batteries!
Looks quite interesting and well packaged though!

Really great lights but expect £60 -£80 import duty/ tax / admin fees when you import to the UK!
